Bombardier beetle’s fascinating defence

I recently encountered a bombardier beetle’s defence during a nature walk. When I inadvertently placed my hand on it, this triggered its explosive defence mechanism. The bombardier beetle is a fascinating creature. It stores two chemicals in separate chambers: hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide. It mixes these chemicals when threatened, causing a rapid, heat-producing reaction. The result is a near-boiling liquid reaching temperatures of close to 100°C (212°F). The beetle sprays this hot mixture through special glands in its abdomen, with an audible pop.
This spray can be dangerous and it burns and stains skin. A great example of nature’s incredible adaptations!
