A Crab’s Dilemma

The Ponds Crab

A Hermit crab with a plastic container for shelter

Hermit crabs, with their vulnerable soft abdomens, have evolved a unique survival strategy. Unable to produce their own protective shells, these resourceful crustaceans scavenge discarded shells to shield their delicate bodies. This adaptation has served them well for millions of years.

Fast forward to today’s world, sea shells have become scarce resources for these animals. Alarmingly, some hermit crabs now resort to using man-made plastic debris as makeshift homes, like this repurposed Ponds face cream container and other plastic waste washing up on our shores. Next time you’re tempted to collect seashells from the beach, reconsider. These seemingly insignificant objects play a vital role in the ecosystem. A diverse community of marine life, including hermit crabs, depends on these natural shelters for survival and protection.

I came across two such crabs while on a walk in the rain forests of the Andaman Islands.
